OTM Cloud Drives Specialty Materials Supplier’s Transportation Needs
Product-based industries rely heavily on raw materials. If they do not get what they need in a timely fashion, it can trigger a wave of interruption that touches every aspect of their supply chain. To keep processes aligned and on schedule, many suppliers leverage transportation management systems (TMS), which help them track, plan, and coordinate the flow of their materials to customers. Our recent client was using a legacy, on-premises TMS, and the solution prevented the company from delivering for their ever-expanding book of business. Any organization with this kind of growth and vast footprint has clearly done a lot of things right. The problem was that the transportation management system that our client was using did not grow along with it. It was only covering about half of their outbound flows and processes, and they would have needed to upgrade the solution to maintain customer support. In addition to the client’s TMS not being scalable, the legacy system failed to deliver in terms of process control. Manufacturing is a very process-heavy industry. Many different teams, systems, and resources are involved in getting products out the door and into the hands of the appropriate parties. The client wanted to improve and standardize these processes across the organization. Another challenge for the client involved the shipment of hazardous goods. As an advanced materials manufacturer, almost half of what the client does is transporting these raw materials, many of which are hazardous. They must be prepared and packaged precisely to avoid spills or other scenarios that could compromise safety or products.
