Specialty Materials Science and Manufacturing Company Unites Supply and Finance Planning with Transformative Cloud Journey

A global materials science and digital identification company that provides branding and information labeling solutions was at a crossroads. It had grown to include an expansive network of shipping and operations centers in several countries and had recently completed a significant acquisition that brought its headcount to approximately 36,000 employees. Its many disparate business units needed to consolidate multiple ERP systems into a single technology platform to bridge the gaps between supply and finance planning.

Stakeholders wanted to replace the manual, one-off processes they used for financial planning and analysis (FP&A) and sales and operations planning (S&OP). Local entities still had control over their planning processes, and no single system could standardize data into one common language. Finding a solution for all interested parties was a challenge. Company leaders engaged Inspirage to guide a journey to the cloud that would enhance collaboration and help achieve the organization’s long-term goals.

At a time when more than two-thirds of Americans say they prefer to buy from businesses that are stewards of the environment, no organization can afford to overlook the importance of prioritizing sustainability. Sustainability — the policies and practices embraced to safeguard our physical environment — encompasses reducing greenhouse gas emissions, minimizing pollution, eliminating processes that waste natural resources, and more.

Today’s climate-conscious consumers want to see governments and businesses take concrete steps to reduce the impacts of climate change, which much of the scientific community believes played a role in recent extreme weather events. In 2022, 67% of U.S. adults who had experienced severe weather within the previous two years said they prioritize environmental protection over economic growth.

In addition to addressing environmental concerns, many consumers and investors want businesses to adopt social and corporate governance policies that reflect their values. Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies typically include efforts to support diversity, fair labor practices, and human rights — in addition to environmental stewardship.

Consumers take notice of such policies: 50% of respondents to one Gallup survey said buying from companies that go out of their way to prioritize the health and well-being of their employees matters a “great deal;” 34% said it matters a “fair amount.” The same survey also revealed that most Americans “value a company’s impact on the local community
(81%) and its business ethics and transparency (79%).”

Other good reasons businesses are paying more attention to sustainability efforts exist today. The repercussions of lockdowns triggered by COVID-19 demonstrated just how fragile supply chains are. More companies and governments are focusing on supply chain sustainability to strengthen them.

What do light bulbs, internal combustion engines, and cloud computing share? They are all examples of disruptive technology — innovations that quickly render earlier solutions obsolete. Once they become accessible to the masses and widely embraced, these transformative solutions can alter businesses, industries, and society in ways that were previously unimaginable. Yet while most people would find it impossible to achieve their
goals without leveraging electric lights or engine-powered transportation, many business leaders still have not embraced cloud computing to drive the end-to-end enterprise evolution required to ensure lasting success.

Digital transformation is no longer just recommended but expected — especially given the pace of technological innovation and adoption. This speed only accelerated when the COVID-19 crisis exposed enormous gaps in demand planning and inefficiencies in the supply chain. Generally, organizations that digitized processes and leveraged digital technology before the pandemic overcame disruptions in their supply chains and other production areas. In fact, “digitally mature organizations” were more likely to have increased their profit margins and annual revenue growth during the pandemic than businesses with processes that were not digitally mature.

Digital transformation continues to be a considerable investment for businesses. By 2021, nearly three-quarters of organizations surveyed by Gartner reported actively engaging in digital transformation initiatives, including 48% that were “heavily involved.” Gartner also stated information technology spending was on pace to reach $4.4 trillion in the United States by 2023. Software, such as infrastructure as a service (IaaS), was expected to be the focus of much of that spending. The days of being able to afford not prioritizing end-to-end digital evolution are over.

Manufacturer of Corrugated Boxes for the Agricultural Industry Reaps the Fruits of Its Transformative Oracle Cloud ERP Initiative

More than 50 years ago, a college student in California got his start in the packaging industry with a job gluing labels onto the wooden crates used for shipping fruits and vegetables. He followed this by starting his own company, which became a significant supplier of grape, tree fruit, and other fresh produce packaging for the agricultural industry. After switching from wooden boxes to corrugated boxes in the 1980s, the organization opened a machinery division to manufacture its products for sale. Within two years, the manufacturer — now an Inspirage client — sold corrugated boxes to businesses throughout the United States. Today, the organization employs as many as 700 people during peak growing and harvesting seasons.

While the quality of our client’s products is a tangible reason for its success, the owner’s unwavering and ongoing commitment to customer service has always set the company apart from its competitors. However, our client goes to such great lengths to keep customers happy that it has created significant complications. These issues arise from embracing non-traditional business processes to cater to their needs, such as changing the product mix and priorities in response to the weather’s effect on crop outputs. The company even sends employees to grower sites to help customers assemble boxes occasionally.

Unfortunately for our client, its technology track record was not equal to its business success. The company was still using an inadequate, decades-old JD Edwards “green screen” legacy solution, which had outdated security features and required periodic hardware and software updates. A lack of comprehensive planning had doomed an earlier attempt to implement a new system. As a result, the company’s finance, manufacturing, and distribution divisions remained disparate. The company had no centralized purchasing processes.

OTM Cloud Drives Specialty Materials Supplier’s Transportation Needs

Product-based industries rely heavily on raw materials. If they do not get what they need in a timely fashion, it can trigger a wave of interruption that touches every aspect of their supply chain. To keep processes aligned and on schedule, many suppliers leverage transportation management systems (TMS), which help them track, plan, and coordinate the flow of their materials to customers. Our recent client was using a legacy, on-premises TMS, and the solution prevented the company from delivering for their ever-expanding book of business. As a result, they turned to Inspirage for a best-in-class solution that would enable the company to overachieve for customers worldwide.

Any organization with this kind of growth and vast footprint has clearly done a lot of things right. The problem was that the transportation management system that our client was using did not grow along with it. It was only covering about half of their outbound flows and processes, and they would have needed to upgrade the solution to maintain customer support. In addition to the client’s TMS not being scalable, the legacy system failed to deliver in terms of process control. Manufacturing is a very process-heavy industry. Many different teams, systems, and resources are involved in getting products out the door and into the hands of the appropriate parties. The client wanted to improve and standardize these processes across the organization. Another challenge for the client involved the shipment of hazardous goods. As an advanced materials manufacturer, almost half of what the client does is transporting these raw materials, many of which are hazardous. They must be prepared and packaged precisely to avoid spills or other scenarios that could compromise safety or products.

That’s not all.

Cargo-handling manufacturer gains increased visibility and strengthens communication with OTM Cloud

Our client is one of the world’s most influential and broad-based cargo-handling organizations. With a presence in 100 countries, the company is widely recognized as a global titan in the shipping container and on-road load handling solutions. While our client specializes in making port work easier by maximizing container volume, communication breakdowns were beginning to pile up.

Our client had very little collaboration with its various suppliers and carriers. For example, once it shipped the equipment, terminals needed to offload containers from ships to docking stations and trucks. There was no way to know, however, where those deliverables were while in transit or when they would arrive. This made providing service updates to customers, who have come to expect real-time updates due to advances in tracking technology, virtually impossible.

Contributing to this problem was the client’s business structure, which includes two distinct units — one for manufacturing and distribution and one for shipping and parts services. Stakeholders in these units were using two different enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions. This made it difficult for the business units to coordinate and communicate with outside suppliers, carriers, and customers. As a result, visibility and communication problems affected the client internally and externally. This also created potential business relationship and financial risks if invoices were lost or unpaid.

From saws to pneumatic drivers to sharpening services, virtually any job around the house or project site is made endlessly easier through semi- or fully-automated equipment. As more people and tasks are added to a project, companies often use project management tools that are not associated with the product and its launch, change, or other processes. This solution enables seamless collaboration by providing Project Status Reports and Project Task, as well as other detailed information, such as Owner, Due Data, Status, and more. When any member wants to get an update on a specific task, they can do so via the Project Status Report tab. Inspirage’s PTT solution ensures that you stay up to
date not only on the project’s timeline but also on its allocated budget. Depending on how crucial the project is, this solution also allows you to define projects based on their priority and risk level. Since the PTT solution is merged with Oracle Fusion Cloud, there is no need to log in to another system. All of it can be done within the same system.

Inspirage Depot Repair Management

Streamline reverse logistics to cut costs and improve operational efficiency

Depot repair manages the repair of damaged products returned by customers. It tracks the repair process from the time products are received into inventory to the point they are shipped back to the customer after repair. During this process, users can verify support service coverage for the damaged product, diagnose the problem with the product, estimate the cost of repair to the customer, obtain customer approval for the price of repair, and define repair jobs in Oracle Cloud Maintenance to resolve the problem. At the end of the repair process, users can create a repair order detailing the charges to the customer for the repair and choose to create a repair order before the repair is complete.

Inspirage’s Depot Repair Management solution addresses both issues with a custom solution that complements the standard Oracle solution. For example, it improves visibility to custom statuses on the Service Request by using Groovy scripts to allow for custom user-defined statuses based on certain business events. This gives customer service agents visibility to the various stages in the lifecycle of the repair. In addition, it also uses deep link functionality to access Service Requests in maintenance work orders. As a result, Repair Centers can access Service Request-related information from the maintenance work order user interface.

With every new sales opportunity comes a demand for quotations and knowing the availability of materials is imperative. However, users often do not have this insight. Without a feasible way to guarantee availability, a salesperson may need to spend time contacting manufacturers and planners directly or referring to a manual data sheet matrix with unrealistic pre-defined lead times. This may cause delays in responses to RFQs from prospective customers and reduce the probability of winning the quotation.

The Inspirage Integrated Quoting and Promising solution enables users to assess material availability during the quotation process. This solution provides a seamless integration between Configure Price Quote (CPQ) and Global Order Promising (GOP) Cloud and gives availability based on current supply and demand. During the quotation transaction in CPQ, the user can click the “Check Availability” button to find the expected ship and arrival dates from the GOP instance. GOP references refreshed supply and demand data in the source instance and returns realistic available dates.
