Global Medical Device Manufacturer Chooses Oracle Cloud for Better Forecasting, Planning, and Execution

Our client, a global medical device manufacturer that markets more than 16,000 products in 135 countries, faced a significant obstacle: Its home-grown IT systems could not keep up with its evolving business needs. To ensure its long-term goals remain within reach, the organization required a best-in-class, scalable solution capable of supporting complex operations across the enterprise and providing the validation necessary to sell its products in highly regulated environments.

The company had built its legacy forecasting system on a Qlik platform, and it had several shortcomings. In particular, updating forecasts by entering additional data from multiple stakeholders proved difficult. Inputting new data required excessive effort and collaboration because the system required adding it at the lowest level. Oracle Cloud applications — on the other hand — allow users to view and enter data at various levels, making collaboration much more efficient.

The company turned to Oracle for help, and Oracle, in turn, recommended partnering with Inspirage, Part of Accenture, to find a better way forward. Inspirage initially supported Oracle with cloud road mapping. That project led to an Oracle Cloud Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) pilot implementation at a single client manufacturing site, which provided the template for an eventual global rollout of Cloud ERP. Improving financial forecasting capabilities was a top priority for the company, so Inspirage also recommended implementing Oracle Cloud Demand Management (DM) and Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP) to enhance its supply chain planning.

More than 50 years ago, a college student in California got his start in the packaging industry with a job gluing labels onto the wooden crates used for shipping fruits and vegetables. He followed this by starting his own company, which became a significant supplier of grape, tree fruit, and other fresh produce packaging for the agricultural industry. After switching from wooden boxes to corrugated boxes in the 1980s, the organization opened a machinery division to manufacture its products for sale. Within two years, the manufacturer — now an Inspirage client — sold corrugated boxes to businesses throughout the United States. Today, the organization employs as many as 700 people during peak growing and harvesting seasons.

While the quality of our client’s products is a tangible reason for its success, the owner’s unwavering and ongoing commitment to customer service has always set the company apart from its competitors. However, our client goes to such great lengths to keep customers happy that it has created significant complications. These issues arise from embracing non-traditional business processes to cater to their needs, such as changing the product mix and priorities in response to the weather’s effect on crop outputs. The company even sends employees to grower sites to help customers assemble boxes occasionally.

Unfortunately for our client, its technology track record was not equal to its business success. The company was still using an inadequate, decades-old JD Edwards “green screen” legacy solution, which had outdated security features and required periodic hardware and software updates. A lack of comprehensive planning had doomed an earlier attempt to implement a new system. As a result, the company’s finance, manufacturing, and distribution divisions remained disparate. The company had no centralized purchasing processes.

Our client develops and markets products that simplify, automate, and innovate complex biomedical testing. Over the years, it had become increasingly difficult to support its aging on-premises value chain planning solutions – Demantra and ASCP (Advanced Supply Chain Planning). Managing upgrades was a pain point for this client, complicated by the limited availability of constrained IT resources. Maintaining the company’s technology infrastructure — and the resources to support underlying operations — was becoming a daunting challenge.

In addition, the customization and system incompatibility of the aging on-premises solution hindered the company’s ability to take advantage of the latest features and best practices available in more modern cloudbased tools. Limited reporting capabilities required complex integrations with reporting tools. Scalability issues forced the supply plan to be split into many plans to accommodate the large amount of data. As a result, end-to-end supply and demand visibility suffered.

The company wanted to overcome these challenges — and, in doing so, lighten the IT department’s workload — by moving to a cloud subscription model and taking advantage of Oracle’s vast infrastructure capabilities, quarterly application upgrades, and robust support. Medical Device Manufacturer’s Demand Planning in Better Health with Oracle SCM Cloud

The advancements in medical device technologies over the past century have been nothing short of life-changing for millions of people worldwide. From cardiac defibrillation to magnetic resonance imaging to the insulin pump and so much more; medical innovations have given individuals a second chance at life, improved the accuracy of medical diagnoses, and made potentially serious diseases more manageable. However, for manufacturers to pump out the life-changing devices that the world relies on for its health needs, their behind-the-scenes production processes must be in good working order. That was not the case for a recent client of ours. In need of a solution, the company turned to Inspirage for a cure.

Inspirage had previously implemented Oracle Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) for this client. They were impressed with the PLM team and wanted to replicate that success on the planning side. When the client reached out to Inspirage this time, the company’s legacy demand planning software was adversely affecting productivity. It was utilizing Forecast Pro, which is leveraged primarily by product-based businesses. Forecast Pro is an off-the-shelf solution that aims to help companies to reduce costs, right-size inventories, and improve planning through accurate business forecasting, statistical methods, machine learning, and other capabilities.

However, the software’s framework and architecture prevented the client from realizing these benefits. In Forecast Pro, the demand planning processes were different in U.S. and international markets. Since the processes were not standard, demand planning was disconnected between teams. For example, because the software was entirely decentralized, individual users were operating in silos, cut off from the rest of the business. This lack of centralization and visibility prevented users from seeing what changes were made to data. Without direct access to that information, workers often had to ask their colleagues to inform them of relevant updates.

Lean Mixed Model Planning and Scheduling Orders for Flow Lines with Automated Mandatory Shop Floor Transactions

When configured products are created, each individual job that makes up the final product needs to be produced on flow lines based on lean manufacturing principles. While these individual jobs provide flexibility in defining the products being produced, they demand a very regimented set of transactions to be performed in order for the final product to be completed well. Scheduling these individual jobs via job shop scheduling is very inefficient and cumbersome. Users require a simpler way to report production on flow lines and without being bothered with all the transactional burdens.

Inspirage’s Lean Manufacturing Solution allows schedulers in the industrial manufacturing, high tech, and medical devices industries to quickly promise customer orders after rapidly checking line capacities. Resulting jobs from back-to-back order processes can be slotted on flow manufacturing lines while taking into consideration capacities and product scheduling constraints. Scheduled jobs can be revisited and overridden to cater to the changing needs of the end customers. By identifying completion at the end of the flow lines, schedulers can automatically finalize all moves, address issues, and backflush transactions. The final outcome is more material control on the shop floor, resulting in a pull manufacturing system which is much more efficient than the push system.

A third-party logistics (3PL) provider, based in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and primarily serving a global furniture chain, wanted to expand beyond furniture. To fuel its growth and scale its operations, the company decided to transform its entire value chain including all systems and processes. Increased market share, service innovation and the development of a best-in-class platform within its industry were the central goals of the intended transformation. The business worked closely with Inspirage to overhaul its systems and implement modern scalable Cloud applications.

The 3PL firm started with core procure-to-pay processes and the applications supporting them. The business had been using Navision previously but was looking to transition to cloud solutions that were easier to use and manage, as well as better-suited to its increasingly mobile workforce. The organization also wanted cloud technology for future-proof operations that could keep up with its rapidly changing requirements. A Fortune 500 multi-national business technology and service company divided into two separate companies earlier this year. Oracle Demantra 12.2.3 Critical Patch Update

Oracle is planning to release a Critical Patch Update for Java on April 18, 2017. Customers running Demantra versions 12.2.3 and earlier must take action to obtain new JAR files that have been signed using the SHA-256 algorithm in order to prevent users from not being able to access the Demantra application after the April Critical Patch Update for Java is applied. Be aware that this update will render Demantra versions 12.2.3 and earlier inaccessible unless these actions are followed.

The Security Warning will state that an unsigned application is requesting permission to run. Although the Security Warning gives the impression that if you choose “Run” the application will run, this is not the case. If you choose “Run” you will still encounter errors with the Java applet.

Demantra versions 12.2.4 and later use the SHA-256 algorithm and will not be affected by this Java update. Customers running Demantra 12.2.4 or later can ignore this note.

To determine your current Demantra version and build, sign-on to Demantra Collaborator Workbench and select “Help” and then “About”. This will display a pop-up window showing the version number and build.
